Critical Disinformation Studies in Canadian Context

Marinov, R. (2025). Critical Disinformation Studies in Canadian Context. Canadian Journal of Communication, 50(4), 596–609.

Abstract

In this article, Robert Marinov examines Disinformation Studies, arguing its narrow focus on the post-2016 era and social media overlooks the long history of propaganda, media manipulation, and structural bias. Building on the CITAP (Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life) Critical Disinformation Studies framework, the article aims to critique the underlying concepts of disinformation. By refering to key articles from the Canadian Journal of Communication, Marinov highlights how historical biases in Canadian media have perpetuated structural inequalities, advocating for a broader, contextually relevant approach to the information landscape.
