SUMMARY:Speculations in the PARC
DESCRIPTION:Join The Speculative Life Research Cluster and The Performing Arts Research Cluster (LePARC) for a  their end of semester mixer event on December 2nd from 5pm to 8:30pm. The event is open for all Milieux members and the general public to attend and aims to provide insight into research conducted within these two clusters in a cozy and festive atmosphere. It will also be the perfect moment to decompress and celebrate the last day of class! \n\nCALL FOR PRESENTATIONS: (For Speculative Life and LePARC members only!) \n \n\nMembers who wish to partake in this opportunity to share their research and meet people from other clusters have until November 27th 11.59pm EST to apply. \nTo submit your proposal\, please fill in this form with a presentation title\, short summary of research/creation and how you wish to present it. \nDue to the relatively short duration of the event\, only 10 presentations will be selected\, prioritizing those that explore common themes and overlaps and that haven’t been shown before. Work in progress are also accepted! \nThe presentations should be between 5 to 10 minutes each as more time will be allocated to informal chats! Without this being an elevator pitch thesis competition\, we encourage you to present your work in a concise way and to keep in mind that you will be engaging with folks from various academic disciplines. \nPlease note that these presentations need to remain minimal in terms of tech requirements; there will be a large screen TV and an HDMI cord for presenters that have visual components to show. \n\n\nPresentations will take place in Spec Life (EV.10.625). The Performance Lab (EV 10.865) will also be open for participants and attendees to check out durational performances and installations presented by LePARC members. Light food and non-alcoholic drinks will be served! \n📅 December 2\, 2024 | 5-8:30 PM \n📍 EV 10.625 / EV 10.865

SUMMARY:Launch of our brand new Visual Methods Studio (VMS) at Speculative Life
DESCRIPTION:Join us on November 10th from 1-3pm at the Speculative Life Research Cluster (EV. 10.625) for the launch of our brand new Visual Methods Studio (VMS)!\n \nA festive event to inaugurate the Ethnography Lab’s new working group! We will provide food for body and mind and we can’t wait to introduce the new studio to you. The VMS is a space to bring all questions/concerns about researching through the visual\, visual analysis\, visually representing research and everything in between. We will be planning speakers/workshops/think-tanks throughout the year about collecting data visually and how to organize it and all the aspects of research that involve visuality. We welcome all students\, staff\, faculty and community members wishing to work on visually oriented or visually informed research.\n \nThe studio will be run by Carolina Cambre and Mitchell McLarnon (profs in the Department of Education). Cambre (one of the founder’s of the ethnolab)’s work academically and artistically explores vernacular visualities asking: How do people produce and direct the visual space. How is the image a doing? What are the social and cultural work/ings of images? McLarnon’s interests include institutional ethnography\, community-based and participatory research\, visual methodologies\, land-based/environmental education\, adult education\, community gardening\, gentrification\, food insecurity and urban political ecology.

SUMMARY:End of Year Exhibition 2023 - Planning Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We have another expo in sight! After the incredible experience we had with In the Middle\, A Chimera last May\, we are eager to start with the planning of this year’s exhibition. The expo 2023 will take place from September 22nd to 29th at the 4th Space with the basic premise of showing off Milieux to the rest of Concordia and helping us better integrate with the larger ecology of the university\, as well as connecting with the public at large. \nFor this edition\, we want students to take the lead! The idea is to put together an interdisciplinary team who will be in charge of collectively curating the exhibition. This planning meeting will be for those who are interested in working on the organizational side and/or be part of the curatorial team to chime in. We will brainstorm ideas for potential themes and discuss paid opportunities to join the planning/curatorial team. \nWhen? Tuesday\, January 25th\, 2023 at noon. \nWhere? Milieux Resource Room (EV 11.705) AND online. \n*For more information and questions please get in contact with Ariana Seferiades at ariana.seferiadesprece@concordia.ca \n

SUMMARY:Applications for the 2022 Summer Writing Residency are open!
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\n\nSummer is a time for writing for many of us\, but not everyone has an easy time finding a stable functional space where they can concentrate. Some write at home\, at cafés\, in the library or in other workspaces but we want to try (again!) something else: a graduate writing residency at Milieux! \n\n\n\nThis summer\, starting June 20th\, we are once again reconfiguring the Milieux Atelier space as a writer’s space specifically designed for students requiring a stable\, quiet and convivial space to write. Upon admission to the program for the summer\, you will have a desk space in a beautiful and bright air conditioned room\, access to the kitchen and other Milieux facilities\, and the support of peers. \n\n\n\nThe only requirements are that you be a Milieux graduate student member writing for a thesis or comprehensive exams\, you can commit to using your desk for at least 3 days a week and you help to keep the space (and kitchen) clean and tidy. Some desk sharing may be required but you will be able to leave books and other materials. The program will run from June 20th through Sept 2nd and all interested applicants should contact Marc Beaulieu at marc.beaulieu@concordia.ca. In your application email\, specify what degree program you are in\, what year of the program\, the kind of writing you will be doing (thesis\, exam\, other)\, any pertinent deadlines for the writing\, and your projected time commitment for using the space (let us know as much as possible what your schedule is\, any vacations and so on\, so we can maximize the use of the space). There are a limited number of desk spaces so we cannot promise to give everyone a spot but we will do our best to accommodate as many students as possible. Application remains open as long as there are unfilled desk spaces!

We will be presenting our Annual Report (2020-2021) for you to peruse\, palpate\, etc.\, and we will be present to answer any and all of your questions! We encourage everyone to attend—even if you have no interest in reports or questions\, we’re interested in seeing you and hearing what you’re up to! \n\n\n\nWhile past annual meetings have famously featured pizza\, given the current circumstances we will not be able to provide such sustenance. It is our hope\, however\, that our presence and discussions will prove to be nourishing! The meeting should last no longer than an hour and a half. \n\n\n\nMark your calendars\, and see you there!

SUMMARY:'In the Middle\, a Chimera' Info Session
DESCRIPTION:In the Middle\, a Chimera is the end-of-year exhibition/symposium for the Milieux Institute for Arts\, Culture and Technology. Multi-headed as its title indicates\, the project will span two weeks\, from May 5th to the 18th\, 2022\, and will take place in numerous locations above and beyond the physical and conceptual limits of Concordia University. Though theoretically an exhibition\, its form will feel more like that of a biennale: a dynamism will imbue these two weeks\, bringing viewers to see affixed projects and ephemeral endeavours—performances\, workshops\, and talks—throughout the city. This will all take place either concurrently with a symposium\, where Milieux researchers will be invited to present papers that refer in some way or other to In the Middle’s theme. \n\n\n\nIn the Middle\, a Chimera considers the ways in which modern technology and systems are presented as serving a specific function that inevitably gives way to something entirely different (and in most instances\, nefarious). New\, breakthrough technology developed under the veil of capitalism inevitably bends to its whirling\, maelstrom pull: the goal of this exhibition/project is to envision and develop community-oriented futures where this pull is redirected towards person-to-person\, mutually beneficial relationships (instead of person-to-fiscal gain)\, as well as the ways in which we might undermine or re-conceptualize these technologies to not only nurture ourselves but our surrounding ecosystems and environments. \n\n\n\nAn integral element to the exhibition is the pragmatic application of community-building\, horizontally oriented project planning; we have selected the institutions and spaces to collaborate with based on their varied positionings (financial\, structural\, thematic\, etc.) with the idea that they could all mutually benefit from collaborating with each other. This\, too\, can be lent to the curatorial approach: emerging artists/student members will be selected and exhibited alongside more established artists (Milieux members and otherwise)\, bringing to the first advantageous visibility and the promise of future opportunities\, and to the latter new ideas from the forthcoming artist generation.  \n\n\n\nThis information session will be for those who are interested in submitting but have questions! It will\, as well\, function as a space for those interested in working on the organizational side to chime in or see in what areas they could work with us. SUMMARY:Open Studio - Vision in Motion: Moholy-Nagy Milieux
DESCRIPTION:The Hungarian artist/photographer/researcher/writer Laszlo Moholy-Nagy ranks as one of the key visionaries of the 20th century. A central figure with the Bauhaus in Germany and then founder of the New Bauhaus in Chicago during the Second World War\, Moholy-Nagy was a strong supporter of art and technology as factors of social progress. He deeply explored and experimented with the fundamental elements of visual perception—light\, color\, space\, matter\, and motion—in what he called “The New Vision” in his groundbreaking writings from the 1920s to the 1940s.   The Moholy-Nagy research studio at Milieux convened in anticipation of the milieuXbauhaus Festival\, with the intention of exploring what the political-social-cultural impact of this new vision means today in an era of transforming perception\, from artificial intelligence\, machine vision\, the transformation of space through new means such as XR/VR/AR\, sensing and the overall shifts in being generated by new forms of cognitive capitalism.  The group’s aim was to re-evaluate and create a new body of knowledge around Moholy-Nagy’s concepts and categories discussed in The New Vision and Vision in Motion. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nThe final results of the research studio’s work will be professional displayed at this open house. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nWHERE: Speculative Life/LabXmodal\, EV 10.815\n\n\n\nWHEN: Friday\, Nov. 8\, 1:00- 4:00 p.m.
