SUMMARY:IFRC Research Bites: Tarcisio Cataldi
DESCRIPTION:Join IFRC for their next Research Bites session featuring Tarcisio Cataldi! 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗕𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 is a lunchtime series hosted by the IFRC that creates a space for members to share their work in a casual\, conversational setting. Bring your lunch\, meet fellow researchers\, and join us for inspiring exchanges across disciplines! \nTarcisio will share his research on an Afro-Brazilian visual imaginary\, drawing on the concept of Quilombismo as articulated by Abdias do Nascimento. In Tarcisio’s work\, he explores how flags can be a powerful medium for speculation\, reimagining collective symbols and narratives. Through research-creation\, he investigates how national identities are deliberately designed and how they can foster new understandings of resistance and belonging in the Brazilian context.  \n  \n𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗱𝗶 (he/him) is an Afro-Brazilian designer and artist born in São Paulo and now based in Tio’tia:ke/Montreal. Committed to Black-centred creation through a Quilombista lens\, Tarcisio specializes in speculative design and diverse cultural manifestations across design and art. His work explores the design\, symbolism\, and cultural significance of flags. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from Universidade Estadual Paulista (São Paulo State University) and a Master’s degree in Design from Concordia University in Montreal. He currently works as a designer for the Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace at the Indigenous Futures Research Centre.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n April 15\, 2026 \n 12:30 PM \nIFRC HQ\, EV 10.705

SUMMARY:Body of Nothing: A Counter-Defence
DESCRIPTION:In Counter-Defence\, Pauline Batamu Kasiwa. Lomami (Po B. K. Lomami) proposes to reimagine the thesis defence as a process of positionality-sharing and relation-building rather than a demonstration of mastery. Decentering clarity\, justification\, and proof\, this conversation will question the demand to render all aspects of artistic research transparent for institutional recognition and will include a guided tour of Lomami’s thesis exhibition. The Counter-Defence is an encounter for co-implication rather than evaluation\, inviting us all to pay attention to how we participate in the politics of interpretations\, the process of meaning-making\, and the mechanisms of validation. \n  \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION: \n \n  \nThe Nothing series is an ongoing body of work composed of entangled projects that together disclose a mental and socio-political infrastructure of collapse\, taking the shape of the exhibition Body of Nothing: Silence\, Avoidance\, Compartmentalization. The concept of nothing is deceptively simple\, often conceptualized as void\, lack\, or absence — a negation of being\, an empty category that holds meaning only in relation to what it negates. Yet\, when Po B. K. Lomami looked at the marks of colonialism\, genocide\, ecocide\, displacement\, and madness\, nothing is not absence but presence: the charged residue of loss\, silence\, refusal\, and survival. Nothing is daily negotiation. It appears in the silence of archives\, in interrupted testimonies\, in refusals to perform trauma for outsiders. Nothing is not emptiness but a critical resource: a mode of opacity\, an affective surplus\, and a necropolitical scar. \nExhibition hours:\nOctober 1 | 5 to 9 p.m.\nOctober 2\, 3\, 4\, 6\, 7 | 1 to 6 p.m.\nOctober 8 | 5 to 9 p.m. \nLocation:\nBlack Box – EV S3. 855 (basement S3)\nConcordia University – EV Building\n1515 Saint-Catherine Street West\, Montreal \n  \n🗓 October  8\, 2025\n🕒 4-6 PM\n📍Milieux Resource Room EV 11.705

SUMMARY:Speculations in the PARC
DESCRIPTION:Join The Speculative Life Research Cluster and The Performing Arts Research Cluster (LePARC) for a  their end of semester mixer event on December 2nd from 5pm to 8:30pm. The event is open for all Milieux members and the general public to attend and aims to provide insight into research conducted within these two clusters in a cozy and festive atmosphere. It will also be the perfect moment to decompress and celebrate the last day of class! \n\nCALL FOR PRESENTATIONS: (For Speculative Life and LePARC members only!) \n \n\nMembers who wish to partake in this opportunity to share their research and meet people from other clusters have until November 27th 11.59pm EST to apply. \nTo submit your proposal\, please fill in this form with a presentation title\, short summary of research/creation and how you wish to present it. \nDue to the relatively short duration of the event\, only 10 presentations will be selected\, prioritizing those that explore common themes and overlaps and that haven’t been shown before. Work in progress are also accepted! \nThe presentations should be between 5 to 10 minutes each as more time will be allocated to informal chats! Without this being an elevator pitch thesis competition\, we encourage you to present your work in a concise way and to keep in mind that you will be engaging with folks from various academic disciplines. \nPlease note that these presentations need to remain minimal in terms of tech requirements; there will be a large screen TV and an HDMI cord for presenters that have visual components to show. \n\n\nPresentations will take place in Spec Life (EV.10.625). The Performance Lab (EV 10.865) will also be open for participants and attendees to check out durational performances and installations presented by LePARC members. Light food and non-alcoholic drinks will be served! \n📅 December 2\, 2024 | 5-8:30 PM \n📍 EV 10.625 / EV 10.865

SUMMARY:The Crit Club with Abbas Akhavan
DESCRIPTION:On September 11\, Post Image cluster will launch the first edition of The Crit Club! \nWHAT IS THE CRIT CLUB? \nThis initiative aims to foster a supportive environment where you can present your work\, receive constructive feedback\, and find motivation to advance your practice beyond the classroom setting. Every Crit Club edition will feature a different guest artist who will lead each session. \nThe Crit Club will take place every two months\, and we will be selecting three participants to present their work each session. This intimate format ensures that each student receives focused and meaningful feedback.  Submissions from participants\, from any Concordia University Studio Arts Master Program (Photo\, Sculpture\, Print Media\, etc.) will be accepted on a first-come\, first-served basis\, so we encourage you to act quickly once the call for submissions is announced. \nThe ethos of the Crit Club is to be experimental\, multidisciplinary\, and supportive. Each session will be paired with a short reading that explores the idea and practice of art critiques critically. What does it mean to speak verbally about the visual? What are the different approaches one can take? \nWhether you are exploring new techniques\, developing a body of work\, or seeking guidance on a project\, the Crit Club is the perfect venue to share your progress and engage with your peers and faculty members. \n  \nABOUT ABBAS AKHAVAN: \nBorn 1977 in Tehran (Iran)\, lives and works in Montreal (Canada). \nThe work of Abbas Akhavan ranges from site-specific ephemeral installations to drawing\, video\, sculpture and performance. The direction of his research has been deeply influenced by the specificity of the sites where he works: the architectures that house them\, the economies that surround them\, and the people that frequent them. \nAbbas Akhavan is represented by the galleries Catriona Jeffries (Vancouver) and The Third Line (Dubai). \n  \n  \n  \n  \n📅: September 11 | 6:30 p.m \n: VA Building – Room 109 \nTo attend The Crit Club fill up this form (max. 12 participants) \n  \n
