SUMMARY:Alignment: From the Governance of Models to Geopolitics
DESCRIPTION:Join Machine Agencies for a presentation featuring Dr. Alexander Campolo. This presentation addresses how the logic of alignment moves ambiguously between the technologies being used to train GenAI models to governance and geopolitics. Rather than asking abstractly how we might govern models by “aligning” them to\, for instance\, democratic values\, we investigate why the rationality of alignment itself has so quickly become hegemonic among AI developers and certain philosophical communities. \n  \nABOUT THE SPEAKER: \nAlexander Campolo is assistant professor (Research) at the Leverhulme Centre for Algorithmic Life and the School of Modern Languages & Cultures at Durham University. His research cuts across histories of machine learning\, statistics\, and computing to theorise societies and cultures being transformed by AI. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nABOUT MACHINE AGENCIES: \nMachine Agencies is part of the Speculative Life Cluster at Milieux Institute. It is an experiment between human and machine intelligences. Our research group encourages cooperation and play\, resisting the antagonism of more instrumental approaches of AI. We engage with posthumanism\, experience design\, and public policy to find new formats\, methods\, and commons to sustain just\, fair\, and better worlds. \n  \n  \n  \n📅  October 22\, 2026 \n⏱️ 12-1:30 PM \n📍Speculative Life EV 10.635 / Zoom \n

SUMMARY:Milieux Mixer #1: A Walk Through Research-Creation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the inaugural session of Milieux Mixer\, a new series where Milieux members shed light on their creative process through short\, 10-minute presentations hosted across different lab and cluster spaces throughout the Institute. The event aims to provide insight into research conducted within the Institute in a cozy and festive atmosphere. \nFor our first session\, presentations will take place in LePARC\, the Biolab\, and TAG. We will meet in LePARC for the initial presentations and move across spaces together. \n🎟️ Limited Capacity: To keep the atmosphere intimate and allow space for conversation\, seating is strictly capped at 8 attendees. Please RSVP to secure your spot! \n \nFEATURED PRESENTERS AND PROJECTS:\n  \nCristina Jimenez: Paper Score from the performance series “Intimate Gestures”.  \nDescription: A body and three brown paper rolls lie on the floor. While the performer plays with the paper as a second skin with its own flows and constraints\, the invitation for audiences to wrap\, touch\, read\, listen and move opens a moment of relationality and embodiment. Paper Score explores motility and tactility through physical theatre and participatory acts. This work is based on Anna Halprin’s fragment of Parades and Changes (1965).  \nContext: As part of my doctoral research-creation project\, Intimate Gestures is a three-part performance that proposes the concept of Molecular Theatre and its relational (in)tensions. I develop performative pieces\, often one-to-one\, that involve diverse objects and materials to consider sensory proximity\, intimacy\, the things’ affect and the intra-connectedness of matter\, humans\, organisms\, and bodies. Under this perspective\, bodies are transanatomical and structured as continuous processes linked to memory\, otherness\, and corporeal perception\, which is a collective act.  \n  \nPolina Shubina:  Moving with the St. Lawrence: experiments in embodied ethnography and guided movement workshops  \nI want to share my ongoing exploration of movement and embodiment in the context of environmental research. I will talk about a series of guided movement workshops that I gave as part of research-creation and art&science projects at the shoreline of the St. Lawrence River and aboard sailing vessels. This evolving practice is inspired by several movement languages and practitioners\, such as Continuum\, Gaga\, and Lara Kramer’s work\, as well as methods of environmental and sensory ethnography.  \n  \nJacqueline Beaumont: Reliquary: A presentation threading together my 8 years of research practice at Milieux  \nReliquary reflects on my origins in the field of bio-design through bacterial pigmentation\, textile craft\, and sculptural object-making. The presentation will focus on my research as a process of affection cultivation\, a relational interdependence\, mediated by laboratory protocols\, microbial kinships\, biopolitical negotiations\, sterilization\, and the communal reciprocity and support that have shaped my work. Reliquary approaches semi-living media as an apparatus to mutate our desires for growth\, preservation\, impurity\, and material transformation.\n  \nErin Hassard: I need an A-Mesh Network  \nIn the years since the overturning of Roe v. Wade in the United States\, the safety of online communication for abortion and reproductive health care seekers has become more concerning; more issues are raised about online privacy and security\, particularly in regions where restrictions and abortion bans are on the rise. This raises questions about new options available in accessing essential services in an era where Big Tech platforms and surveillance make online communication increasingly more perilous and its security unreliable. By using LoRa companion devices over Meshtastic and Meshcore network channels\, this prototype abortion referral service mapped out and documented the challenges and practicality of accessing essential healthcare referral services through longe-range radio technology. A private channel was set up to ensure the packets received and submitted were encrypted. The prototype evolved into a methodological conundrum that begs the question: in a world of online platform communication\, is it possible to privately communicate via text at a distance without any online engagement?  \n  \n📅 November 5\, 2026  \n⏱️ 5-6 PM  \n📍 LePARC Performance Lab EV 10.785 \n  \nBy attending this event\, you consent to being photographed\, filmed\, or recorded. SUMMARY:Research Bites: Research Initiatives at AbTeC
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the IFRC for a lunchtime conversation with Julia Therrien (Abundant Intelligences Associate Director of Research Operations)\, Van Racine (Skins Coordinator)\, and Arijit Debnath (AbTeC Gallery Coordinator) to learn about the research and research-creation initiatives at Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace (AbTeC).\n\n  \nABOUT AbTeC:\nAbTeC is a research-creation studio-lab bringing together artists\, academics\, activists\, and technologists to explore the intersections of Indigenous creative practice\, cultural expression\, knowledge frameworks\, and networked technologies. This Research Bites session will introduce three of its initiatives: AbTeC Gallery\, an Indigenously determined virtual exhibition space for contemporary art; Skins\, a series of workshops supporting Indigenous storytelling and digital media; and Abundant Intelligences\, an international project exploring the integration of Indigenous Knowledges and artificial intelligence systems. Through a conversation with members behind these initiatives\, participants will have an opportunity to learn about their work\, approaches\, and ongoing research.\n\nResearch Bites is a lunchtime series hosted by the Indigenous Futures Research Centre (IFRC)\, creating space for members to share their work in a casual\, conversational setting. SUMMARY:Co-Learning Score for Artistic Research
DESCRIPTION:Co-Learning Score for Artistic Research takes place at the intersection of criticality and research-creation\, creating a space where theory and practice enter into sustained and generative dialogue. Structured as a performance score\, the process unfolds through biweekly encounters across the academic year\, establishing a rhythm of epistolary exchanges\, questions\, and performance responses among artist-researchers from LePARC and Professor Lília Mestre. Rather than working toward a predetermined outcome\, the score provides a framework for collectively researching\, probing\, and reflecting on artistic knowledge through practice.  \n  \nFor the Milieux anniversary\, Master’s student Rena Eyamie\, PhD students Alexandrya Eaton and Evgenia Mikhaylova\, together with Lília Mestre\, will share this practice through a performative presentation. The presentation will open the research process to the public through a combination of discursive and embodied modalities\, foregrounding process-sharing rather than presenting a fixed result. In doing so\, it offers a glimpse into how artistic research can become a collective and situated practice of thinking\, doing\, and making knowledge public.  \n  \n  \n📅  November 6\, 2026  \n⏱️ 1-2:30 PM  \n📍 Speculative Life Room EV 10.625
