SUMMARY:Video Game Fanfiction Creative Writing Workshop with Lídia Pereira
DESCRIPTION:Videogames create worlds. Often\, those worlds mirror our own\, reproducing certain ideals and values as norm through their narrative\, game play\, design\, etc. This session begins with an invitation to the participants to critically consider those worlds\, identifying the key points and elements through which specific videogames circulate political\, cultural and social values. How do the games we play every day vehiculate ideology? Using this knowledge\, participants are then invited to intervene upon these videogame worlds through the writing\, drawing\, collaging\, etc. of fan fictions\, using the original text to re-construct these worlds or reveal crucial aspects they might be hiding in plain sight. At the end of the session\, participants will have begun to create a narrative with their interventions upon these universes and the results may be as diverse as creative writing\, the generation of new games in the form of text-based adventures\, comics\, mini-graphic novels\, etc. \nABOUT LÍDIA PEREIRA: \nLídia Pereira (PT) studied at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam (MA Media Design and Communication) and at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (BA Communication Design). Her practice bridges the fields of graphic design\, art\, digital media and infrastructure\, critical theory\, and publishing. In 2015\, she founded the Pervasive Labour Union zine\, a semi-regular publication in which contributors reflect on topics relating to labour on corporate social networks\, algorithmic governance\, and alternative digital infrastructures. Currently\, she is a PhD candidate at the PhDArts programme\, a collaboration between the Leiden University and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague\, where she is investigating videogames in the context of art education as a site of struggle against hegemonic discourse. \n  \nRequirements: Please choose a videogame you know well ahead of the session. To participate please send an email to tag.coordinator@concordia.ca with the subject line ‘Fanfiction Creative Writing Workshop.’ \n\n March 18\, 2025\n 4- 7 PM\nTag Lab EV 11.435

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Streaming by the Rest of Us: Microstreaming Videogames on Twitch
DESCRIPTION: Technoculture\, Art & Games Research Centre (TAG)  is excited to announce the launch of Streaming by the Rest of Us: Microstreaming Videogames on Twitch\, a new book by Mia Consalvo\, Marc Lajeunesse\, and Andrei Zanescu. The event will feature a discussion with the authors\, moderated by TAG co-director Rilla Khaled. \n  \nABOUT THE BOOK: \n\n\n\n\nAn in-depth investigation of the Twitch streamers who make up the largest population on the platform: those streaming to small audiences or even no one. \nThe vast majority of people who stream themselves playing videogames online do so with few or no viewers. In Streaming by the Rest of Us\, Mia Consalvo\, Marc Lajeunesse\, and Andrei Zanescu investigate who they are\, why they do so\, and why this form of leisure activity is important to understand. Unlike the esports athletes and streaming superstars who receive the lion’s share of journalistic and academic attention\, microstreamers are not in it for the money and barely have an audience. In this\, the first book dedicated to the latter group\, the authors gather interviews from dozens of microstreamers from 2017 to 2019 to discuss their lives\, struggles\, hopes\, and goals. \nFor readers interested in livestreaming\, and Twitch in particular\, the book rethinks the medium’s history through accounts of the everyday uses of webcams\, with particular attention to notions of liveness and authenticity. These two concepts have become calling cards for the videogame livestreaming platform and underlie streamer motivations\, the construction of their practices (whether casual\, serious\, or anywhere in between)\, and the complex “metas” that take shape over time. The book also looks at the authors’ own practices of livestreaming\, focusing on what can be gained through experiencing the lived reality of the practice. Finally\, the authors explain how Twitch’s platform (studied from 2017–2023) informs how streamers structure their every day and how corporate ideologies bleed into real-world spaces like TwitchCon. \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHORS:\n\nMia Consalvo is Professor and Canada Research Chair in Game Studies and Design at Concordia University. She is the co-author of Real Games: What’s Legitimate and What’s Not in Contemporary Videogames (2019) and Players and their Pets: Gaming Communities from Beta to Sunset (2015). She is also co-editor of Sports Videogames (2013) and the Handbook of Internet Studies (2011)\, and is the author of Cheating: Gaining Advantage in Videogames (2007) as well as Atari to Zelda: Japan’s Videogames in Global Context (2016). \nMia runs the mLab\, a space dedicated to developing innovative methods for studying games and game players. She’s a member of the Centre for Technoculture\, Art & Games (TAG)\, she has presented her work at industry as well as academic conferences including regular presentations at the Game Developers Conference. She is the Past President of the Digital Games Research Association\, and has held positions at MIT\, Ohio University\, Chubu University in Japan and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. \n\nMarc Lajeunesse is a research associate\, course instructor\, and the coordinator of TAG\, the Technoculture\, Arts\, and Games Research Centre. His recent work examines toxicity in online game spaces\, with an emphasis on player-led strategies for in-game toxicity mitigation. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAndrei Zanescu is an Assistant Professor at Concordia University\, specializing in the intersection of Hollywood film\, prestige television\, and blockbuster video games. His research explores the cultural resonance of blockbuster games\, the processes of legitimizing these works at trade shows and award ceremonies\, and the impact of AAA game-making on global gaming culture. \n  \n🗓: February 20\, 2025\n🕒: 3:00 PM\n📍: TAG Lab EV 11.435

SUMMARY:Engagement and Emotions in Game Data Work
DESCRIPTION:On October 24th\, join TAG for a talk about the emotional landscape of data-driven decision-making in game development with guest speaker Olli Sotamaa. \n  \nABOUT THE EVENT: \nApplication of data analytics and other data-driven working methods creates new processes and work cultures in game studios. While data analytics tools are often promised to support rational\, calm and emotion-free decision-making and to reduce developers’ reliance on intuition\, hunch and gut feeling\, recent empirical data indicates that working with game data provokes a large spectrum of emotions. The presentation introduces the idea of ‘game data work’\, explores its affective side\, and discusses how it potentially changes our overall understanding of game production. \n  \nABOUT THE SPEAKER: \n Olli Sotamaa is a professor of Game Culture Studies and leads the Tampere University Game Research Lab with professor Frans Mäyrä. He also serves as team leader in The Centre of Excellence in Game Culture Studies.  He has studied various game cultural phenomena related to online communities\, fandom and game modding\, and has also critically examined the game industry and different forms and contexts of game production. \n \n  \n: October 24\, 2024 | 3-4 PM \n: TAG Lab EV 11.435

SUMMARY:Pinball Power: How an old coin operated arcade persevered for a century
DESCRIPTION:Join Visiting Scholar Robert Glashüttner and TAG member Dr. Martin French for a discussion around Pinball. \nPinball is an archaic arcade game for some\, a technical marvel for others\, and a favorite pastime for more and more dedicated players. Little is commonly known about pinball except that it’s made up of big sturdy amusement machines where you shoot steel marbles with flippers up a tilted playfield. Both game culture communities as well as scholars tend to underestimate the finesse of playing and the design decisions behind developing physical pinball devices. Most importantly\, it is a game of hybridization in different aspects: Pinball is physical and digital\, retro and contemporary\, mechanical and electronic\, skill-based and chance-induced. Therefore it should be worth more attention. This talk gives an overview on why pinball research could be more than a side note within game studies. \n  \n📅 August 22\, 2024 \n📍TAG Lab\, EV 11.435 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Unity Dialogue Workshop featuring Owen Hellum
DESCRIPTION:Curious about the world of dialogue systems? On Friday\, April 19\, TAG Research Cluster will host a workshop about Descant featuring Owen Hellum! \n  \nABOUT DESCANT: \nDescant (https://omch.tech/descant) is a Unity Dialogue System plugin designed to be easy to pick up and use\, but with room for growth and customization. It was developed for a CART Independent Study\, with the goal to address the missing niche for dialogue systems between ones that are enormous and expensive\, and those that are tiny and un-featured. It uses a node-based dialogue creation system\, and makes use of the Unity Component system concept for enhancing such nodes. \n  \nABOUT THE WORKSHOP: \nThe workshop will start with a straightforward overview of the system\, accompanied by a detailed explanation of the Component framework. This will be succeeded by several hours dedicated to practical experimentation. The workshop is designed to resemble both a tutorial and a game jam development session. Subsequently\, a segment will be allocated for participants to provide feedback and offer suggestions for improvement. \n  \n: April 19\, 2024 | 1-4 p.m \n: TAG Lab E.V 11.435 \nATTENDEES ARE ASKED TO BRING COMPUTERS WITH THEM\, WITH A RECENT VERSION OF UNITY INSTALLED! \n🔗 Unity can be downloaded here: https://unity.com/download \n

SUMMARY:Materialist Ecomodding and Picopower Logics: The Case of SunBlock One\, a solar Minecraft server
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging presentation of the SunBlock One solar Minecraft server project\, part of the Pico Power residency with TeZ. \nBart Simon\, Director of Milieux Institute will share with us the research-creation journey of the SunBlock project. This innovative project tackles two crucial challenges in energy transition research: \n\nThe significant contribution of personal computing and especially gaming to the global carbon footprint.\nThe role of popular and moddable sandbox games in fostering shared alternative energy imaginaries.\n\nWHAT IS SUNBLOCK ONE? \nSunBlock One operates on a special setup with solar panels and batteries. It’s a Forge-modded Minecraft 1.20.2 Server running on an Intel NUC computer powered by a 12v LiON battery connected to a 100W solar panel. Players can monitor their energy consumption in real-time while playing! \nThe talk will present various stages of the project\, showcasing the work that has been accomplished and discussing how the project might progress over the summer. \nBart will also introduce the idea of picopower logic\, a simple yet powerful approach to utilize energy on small\, local scale to combat climate change. \n  \n: April 9\, 2024 | 2 p.m \n: TAG Lab E.V 11.435 \nALL ARE WELCOME!

SUMMARY:TALK: Daniel Vella - The Promise of Being Otherwise: 'Being Someone Else' in Games
DESCRIPTION:TAG is happy to invite everyone to a talk with Dr. Daniel Vella (University of Malta) on video game subjectivity and The Promise of Being Otherwise: ‘Being Someone Else’ . \nPopular discourses around digital games have long made the claim that games can grant the experience of ‘being someone else\,’ letting us step into the shoes of heroes\, adventurers\, rogues and champions. This presentation shall take this apparent promise as its starting point: what does it mean for a game to grant us the possibility of being someone else? How can a game construct us as a different subject? To address this question\, this presentation shall touch upon the link between play and freedom in the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre and Eugen Fink\, before drawing on work in game studies on avatars\, identity\, subjectivity\, agency and game aesthetics to discuss\, in more concrete terms\, how games structure particular ways of being for players to inhabit during their play. Finally\, the presentation will end with an interrogation of the promise itself\, asking: what are the ideological assumptions behind the idea that a game can let us ‘be someone else\,’ and what potentially problematic implications are contained in this promise? \nDr. Daniel Vella is a senior lecturer at the Institute of Digital Games (University of Malta). He is the co-author (with Stefano Gualeni) of Virtual Existentialism (Palgrave Pivot\, 2020) and has published a number of papers and book chapters on subjectivity\, aesthetics and space and place in games. He is also a narrative designer for board games with Mighty Boards\, and his writing credits include Posthuman Saga (2019) and Fateforge: Chronicles of Kaan (forthcoming\, 2023).
