Special focus: valorizing Canadian wool! \nUpcoming events\nOctober 18th\, 2023\, from 12-1 PM EST: British artist and author (On Mending: Stories of Damage and Repair) Celia Pym joins us to speak about looking after our woollens. Since 2007 her work has involved collecting stories from the people whose clothing she has repaired\, and considers why repair matters more today than ever before. *drop-in mending circle with local artists Selina Latour and Mea Bissett. SUMMARY:DIGS + MHRC: Talk and Seminar with Sarah Sharma
DESCRIPTION:The Digital Intimacy\, Gender\, & Sexuality Lab (DIGS) and the Media History Research Centre (MHRC) invite everyone to a talk and seminar featuring Sarah Sharma! The talk\, titled “Broken Machines: Towards a Techno-Feminist Refusal” will be held on September 21st at the Milieux Resource Room (EV 11.705). During the talk\, Sarah will delve into the subject of her upcoming book\, which advances a techno-feminist media theory to account for Big Tech and the gendered politics of utility\, exit and repair.  \nFollowing the talk\, a small graduate seminar with Sarah Sharma is scheduled for September 22nd at 10 a.m.\, in which they will discuss the preface and introduction to “Re-Understanding Media: Feminist Extensions of Marshall McLuhan.” Please register for this seminar here. Those registered will receive a PDF of the reading by email. \nRegister here for the talk\nRegister here for the seminar\nSarah Sharma is Associate Professor of Media Theory and Director of the Institute of Communication\, Culture\, Information and Technology (ICCIT) at the University of Toronto. She is the author of In the Meantime: Temporality and Cultural Politics (Duke UP\, 2014). This book challenges the popular sentiment that the world is “speeding up” and locates instead how temporality operates as a key relation of power structured at the intersection of a range of social differences and technologies. Her edited volume (with Rianka Singh) Re-Understanding Media: Feminist Extensions of Marshall McLuhan (Duke UP 2022) highlights her time as director of the McLuhan Centre between 2017-2022 and retrieves a feminist version of “the medium is the message.” Sarah is currently working on a new book (tentatively titled Broken Machine: Towards a Techno-feminist Refusal) which advances a techno-feminist media theory to account for Big Tech and the gendered politics of utility\, exit and repair.

The residency takes a critical and creative approach to understand and imagine human-machine relations\, and takes the event of NAO’s visit to Montreal as an occasion to grasp this machinic being through their everyday rituals.  \nAs part of our residency we are hosting a workshop series focused on social imagination and (re)defining the relationships we humans have with machines. In these workshops we will search for alternatives to the typical human-machine narratives of consumption of exploitation\, and find ways to make them real. To guide this search we will be centering the notion of the ritual not only as a method for understanding the day-by-day reinforcement of existing relationships\, but also as a way of making space for (re)conceiving new relations/interactions\, a way of inhabiting a liminal space in which we can be creatively (and critically) thinking through ‘things’. \nAs a participant you will have the opportunity to connect and collaborate with the robot\, and design interactions\, moments\, and experiences with NAO. Furthermore you will engage with broader questions that NAO personifies—about robots\, machines and social imaginaries—with a set of hands-on making/doing activities. SUMMARY:Mobilizing Data for Justice: A Skills Development Workshop in Data Activism
DESCRIPTION:Interested in learning how to do data activism?  \nJoin our free workshop from May 5-7th on Mobilizing Data for Justice: A Skills Development Workshop in Data Activism\, at Concordia University and online! “Mobilizing Data for Justice” is a three-day skills development workshop where activists and critical researchers can learn methods for making sense of and engaging with data in social struggles. \n\n\n\nWe have invited activists from around the world to share their experiences doing data activism. The workshops will focus on three areas: \n\n\n\n\nVisualizing: how can activists and critical researchers deploy techniques\, such as mapping and countermapping\, to visualize social justice issues in new ways?\nArchiving: how can activists and critical researchers effectively engage with archives in getting access to data and curate their own community-based archives in thinking about data differently? \nSurveillance: how can activists and critical researchers identify and negotiate surveillance infrastructures in organizing their work?\n\nThe event will be interactive\, emphasizing dialogue\, with the aim of creating opportunities for activists and researchers to troubleshoot ideas together. Please send along any specific questions or data needs you would like us to explore during the workshop. How can I register?  \n\nTo join us in-person register here. \nTo join us online register here.\n\n\n\nPlease note that we will need to limit in-person attendance for some sessions. We will prioritize attendance for community activists working in these areas\, though we will seek to accommodate other participants as best we can.We know that community groups are often under-resourced and overworked\, so we are offering a small bursary for activists of up to $250 in recognition of your time\, energy\, and resources required to attend. We are inviting conversation among all communities impacted by the colonial gaze. \nAfter the talk we will have a closing reception with refreshments! \nWhen? April 25th at 4PM \nWhere? Milieux Resource Room\, Concordia University (EV. 11705) \nCaroline Monnet (Anishinaabe/French) is a multidisciplinary artist from Outaouais\, Quebec. She studied Sociology and Communication at the University of Ottawa (Canada) and the University of Granada (Spain) before pursuing a career in visual arts and film. Her work has been programmed internationally at the Whitney Biennial (NYC)\, Toronto Biennale of Art\, KØS museum (Copenhagen)\, Museum of Contemporary Art (Montréal)\, the National Art Gallery (Ottawa). Solo exhibitions include Montreal Museum of Fine Arts\, Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt\, Arsenal Contemporary (NYC) and Centre d’art international de Vassivière (France). Her films have been programmed at film festivals such as TIFF\, Sundance\, Aesthetica (UK)\, Palm Springs and Cannes. In 2016\, she was selected for the Cinéfondation residency in Paris. Her work is included in numerous collections in North America as well as the permanent UNESCO collection in Paris.  Monnet is recipient of the 2020 Pierre-Ayot award\, the 2020 Sobey Art Award\, the Merata Mita Fellowship\, and the REVEAL Indigenous Art Awards. She is based in Montreal and represented by Blouin-Division Gallery. \nMonnet uses visual and media arts to demonstrate a keen interest in communicating complex ideas around Indigenous identity and bicultural living through the examination of cultural histories. Her work grapples with colonialism’s impact\, updating outdated systems with indigenous methodologies. Monnet has made a signature for working with industrial materials\, combining the vocabulary of popular and traditional visual-cultures with the tropes of modernist abstraction to create unique hybrid forms. Monnet is always in the stage of experimentation and invention\, both for herself and for the work. \n

She holds a degree from Ontario College of Art and a Master of Fine Art from the University of Western Ontario. Niro has exhibited across Canada has work in collections of the Canada Council Art Bank\, Canadian Museum of History\, and Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography. Her award-winning films have been screened in festivals worldwide\, and she presented work at the 2003 Venice Biennale. Shelley Niro lives in Brantford\, Ontario. \nFor over 30 years\, Shelley Niro has challenged dominant perceptions of Indigenous people throughout her extensive art and filmmaking practice. Often using humour and a flair for storytelling\, Niro addresses stereotypical representations of Indigenous people to expose powerful colonial attitudes. From her unique perspective as a Mohawk artist\, Niro frequently casts herself and family members in her work to harnesses her familial agency. Niro’s work continually stresses the significance of the land within Indigenous worldviews\, languages\, and ways of being.

DESCRIPTION:Machine Agencies is thrilled to welcome Dr. Luke Stark for the talk “Laws of Inference: Conceptual Limits for Automated Decision-Making”: \nRegulation via the epistemological structure of an application space is one potential mechanism to address the social impact of rapid advances in machine learning (ML) and other artificial intelligence (AI) methods used for automated decision-making. Drawing on Carlo Ginzburg’s distinction between conjectural (abductive/inductive) and empirical (deductive) science\, I argue that ML systems should be assessed for their conceptual assumptions as well as their proposed use cases. This assessment should be grounded both in the forms of inferential reasoning (inductive\, deductive\, and or abductive) involved in a particular automated analysis\, as well as the domain in which the analysis is being performed. In the paper\, I sketch out a matrix of inferential types and use case categories that serves as a first step towards a more granular AI governance regime. Given the shaky epistemological foundations and social toxicity of much automated conjecture about human activities and behavior\, such use cases deserve heightened legal\, technical\, and social scrutiny. \nWhen? DESCRIPTION:The DIGS Lab is hosting a talk with Dr. Zhifan Luo on a computational approach to collecting\, analyzing\, and visualizing digital text as data. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nA deeply digitalized social world has brought studies of media to an “Age of Data Abundance\,” which comes with its own opportunities and challenges. For a new generation of scholars\, proper methodological tools are indispensable if they want to harvest the opportunities while facing up to the challenges of the digital age. In this workshop\, participants will be introduced to a computational approach to collect\, analyze\, and visualize digital text as data. In the first part of the workshop\, they will learn about how computational methods may complement\, advance\, and transcend traditional ways of studying media through cases. In the second part\, they will get a chance to do hands-on exercises and play with R\, a programming language widely used by social scientists\, to collect and/or analyze some social media data. \nWhen? DESCRIPTION:The Aging in Data project is hosting the workshop How We Live with Data – in a collaboration with the Atwater Library – with researchers Nicole Dalmer\, Cal Biruk\, and Stephanie Hatzifilalithis. The workshop will be happening on February 10th\, from 1:00-5:00 PM\, at the Milieux Resource Room (EV 11.705) \nThe aim of this interactive workshop is to explore and challenge understandings of the relationship between older people\, data\, and digital technologies. SUMMARY:How to Stay a Human When You Dance With a Machine
DESCRIPTION:When we use a computer\, do we have to think in the language of the computer? Join us for the next installment of A Walk in LePARC with digital interactive artist Tim Murray-Browne. \nI’ll talk about my artistic practice of building embodied interactive systems. Particularly with dancers\, I’ve found code introduces abstractions of the body\, which can be more limiting than enabling. Recently\, I’ve been using unsupervised AI to devise rather than design interaction between human and system. I’ve found the results refreshing and captivating\, but it requires a rethink of how we relate to machines: a shift away from the instrumental back towards that of belonging. \nWhen? My work explores the parts of being human that get left behind when we interact with technology. I create interactive installations and performances that connect the moving body\, image\, sound and light but my primary medium is the interaction itself. My work aims to tap into the non-intellectual\, yet intelligent\, embodied mind. I graduated with a first in Maths and Computer Science from Oxford University and completed a PhD on interactive art and music at Queen Mary University of London. I code bespoke software for much of my work. \nTim is currently artist-in-residence at LePARC and Speculative Life.

DESCRIPTION:Come to feel and explore nostalgia with us at the NOSTALGIA/LOSTAGAIN symposium – a student-led symposium that explores creative nostalgia through panel discussions and workshops from experts in the arts and sciences.  \nWhen? February 4th\, from 10:00-4:00 PM EST. \nWhere? Milieux Institute (EV 11.705) and online \nNostalgia reminds us of a past that was and could have been (Boym 2001). In a place of lost possibilities\, of those we’ve lost touch\, and memories of losses… What do we also lose or throw away in the present in order to be nostalgic? What if we could use these tools of forgetting the losses of a past to help us remember how to prevent more of them in the future? Digital tools can evoke a certain feeling of loss; a past that is gone. But given a message of hope\, of possibility\, this loss may inspire us to work towards a future without repeating the same losses of the past. This symposium centres around the use of CREATIVE NOSTALGIA: a kind described by Svetlana Boym (2001) as being able to reveal the “fantasies of an age” – our desires to get away from losses\, regrets\, and pain – but it is in these emotional tools capable of change and hope where “the future is born”. \nYou can check their website for the whole programming here. \nRESERVE A SPOT

SUMMARY:End of Year Exhibition 2023 - Planning Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We have another expo in sight! After the incredible experience we had with In the Middle\, A Chimera last May\, we are eager to start with the planning of this year’s exhibition. The expo 2023 will take place from September 22nd to 29th at the 4th Space with the basic premise of showing off Milieux to the rest of Concordia and helping us better integrate with the larger ecology of the university\, as well as connecting with the public at large. \nFor this edition\, we want students to take the lead! The idea is to put together an interdisciplinary team who will be in charge of collectively curating the exhibition. This planning meeting will be for those who are interested in working on the organizational side and/or be part of the curatorial team to chime in. We will brainstorm ideas for potential themes and discuss paid opportunities to join the planning/curatorial team. \nWhen? Tuesday\, January 25th\, 2023 at noon. \nWhere? SUMMARY:Biocharmed: A Talk with Dr. Anne Pasek
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second instalment in a series of talks planned collaboratively by the Critical Anthropocene Research Group (CARG)\, Colonialism Race and Indigenous Ecologies (CRIE)\, and Society\, Politics\, Animals and Materiality (SPAM). \nThe Critical Anthropocene Speakers Series will feature an in-person and online talk with Dr. Anne Pasek: “Biocharmed: (Affective) Value Forms in Emerging Carbon Removal Markets”\, in which Dr. Pasek will be speaking about her work in Low Carbon Research Methods. Dr. Pasek is an interdisciplinary researcher working at the intersections of climate communication\, the environmental humanities\, and science and technology studies. She studies how carbon becomes communicable in different communities and media forms\, to different political and material effects. \nDr. Pasek is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cultural Studies and the School of the Environment at Trent University\, as well as the Canada Research Chair in Media\, Culture and the Environment. \nRegister for the talk here.
