Milieux Mixer #2: A Walk Through Research-Creation
November 6 | 14:00 - 15:00

Join us for the second session of Milieux Mixer, a new series where Milieux members shed light on their creative process through short, 10-minute presentations hosted across different lab and cluster spaces throughout the Institute. The event aims to provide insight into research conducted within the Institute in a cozy and festive atmosphere.
Presentations will take place in Textiles and Materiality, TAG and Speculative life. We will meet in Textiles and Materiality for the initial presentations and move across spaces together.
Limited Capacity: To keep the atmosphere intimate and allow space for conversation, seating is strictly capped at 8 attendees. Please RSVP to secure your spot!
FEATURED PRESENTERS AND PROJECTS:
Fatemeh Hashemi Nasab: Hear What I Wear: Giving Garments a Voice
What if every garment had its own voice? This research-creation project explores how sound could communicate a garment’s appearance, including its colour, shape, texture, patterns, prints, and design details, allowing blind and visually impaired people to experience and understand what someone is wearing beyond the visual.
CLUCA: The Womb
The persistence of the present is the persistence and embedding within social bodies of the past, the present, and the future. Archiving, preserving, and collecting oral, written, and physical history, as well as the built environment. Reassembling, reconstituting through a unique, personal narrative that is nonetheless imbued with the collective. Quasi-universal landmarks and traces become blurred within an almost chaotic assemblage that disregards angles, nor depth of field, nor perspectives. The Womb is a geographical recomposition of an imbalanced landscape—patched, woven, and adorned. To inscribe it in time, to make it last, to cling to it as long as possible, to immortalize it, to cover it, to share it, to reveal it, to grant it the power to embody a commonality, to reactivate the intimate memories of each and every one of us, which, when placed end to end, add up to a whole.
Drawing on the cartography of the original site, a photographic montage that attempts to approximate reality while retaining the freedom to re-examine its geometry will form the basis for future Jacquard weavings in shades of blue (the color of work overalls) and white.
Gabriella Freeman: Raconte-moi le Ruisseau: An Oral History of the Urban Stream
Grappling with ecological grief in the context of changing earth systems and colonial land disruptions, Freeman engages local oral histories to explore how storytelling can serve to cultivate restorative relationships to disturbed landscapes. In this presentation, Freeman thinks through walking, oral histories, textile circles and grief rituals as methodology for their graduate research along a paved-over urban waterway in Montreal.
