Position title: Research Cluster Coordinator
Department: Textiles and Materiality (T&M), Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture, and Technology, Concordia University
Hours: 7 hours/week, split between fixed on-site activities within the cluster space and flexible administrative tasks, as needed throughout the semester
Typical work schedule: Agreed upon depending on yearly cluster activities and research events
Salary: In accordance with relevant union rates (CARE or CREW) – see salary scales
Employment period: October 1st to June 30th (semi-flexible)
About Textiles and Materiality:
The Textiles and Materiality Research Cluster is part of the Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture and Technology at Concordia University. T&M brings together research- creation expertise from textile arts and material culture to experiment with methods, processes, and interdisciplinary modes of thinking that shape the future of textiles, material objects, and experiential spaces.
The cluster fosters innovative research in textile arts and technologies, such as complex weaving, electronic fabrics, interactive garments, rapid prototyping technologies, emerging materials, and soft surfaces. By supporting collaboration and experimentation, the cluster cultivates an inclusive research community, at the graduate and faculty level, that supports innovation in new material research practices, leveraging the rich potential of interdisciplinary work.
Job Description
The Cluster Research Coordinator supports the community life, communications, and research operations of the Textiles and Materiality Cluster. The coordinator works closely with the T&M Co-Directors, the Research Support Technician, and other stakeholders in the Milieux Research Institute to ensure cluster activities and programming are accessible, well-communicated, and welcoming. The Coordinator role emphasizes community presence and administrative support including cluster meetings, research presentations, collaborative activities and exchanges, workshops, and other community building activities.
Administrative
- Support cluster meetings, workshops and events as prioritized by faculty members, in conversation with the co-directors and cluster technician.
- Participate in regular planning meeting with co-directors and technician.
- Assist with membership coordination (new member applications, space access, visiting researchers/artists) in consultation with co-directors.
- Animate the Cluster Commons space on a weekly basis, supporting the community inclusively, logistically, and socially.
- Support the annual student research grant competition by promoting the call, gathering submissions, coordinating with faculty adjudicators, and assisting with final reports.
- Help maintain administrative documents and contribute to end-of-year reports by gathering and formatting information, with support from co-directors and Milieux/Hexagram staff.
- Assist with budget tracking and planning in consultation with the co-directors and Hexagram administrator.
Communications
- Keep the T&M calendar, membership list, newsletter, social media, and website up to date; maintain the cluster’s online presence, research dissemination, and event documentation.
- Act as a point of contact for researcher members, visiting artists, and student membership.
- Promote cluster events and projects in coordination with Milieux’s Communications Assistant.
- Respond to member enquiries and facilitate clear communication about space bookings and equipment usage.
- Share research highlights and events outcomes through newsletters, social media, and blog posts.
- Support communications between cluster members, co-directors, Milieux administration, and other stakeholders (such as other clusters and the broader Concordia community) on shared initiatives and collaborations.
Facilitate clear communication around special events, research projects, guest speakers, and workshops, coordinating with members and partners.
Estimated Workload Map
Weekly (~3-4 hours/week)
Maintain a welcoming presence at the Cluster Commons space, supporting community and regular logistics. Keep membership list, website, social media, and T&M calendar up to date. Check-in and respond to member enquiries and facilitate communication about space bookings and equipment. Meet with research support technician about regularly planned workshops and workshop registration.
Monthly (~2-3 hours/month, flexible)
Participate in monthly planning meeting with co-directors and research support technician (45-60 mins/month). Draft and send monthly newsletter with support of memberships/co-directors. Cross-promote cluster events with Milieux and other clusters. Request member research highlights and document on website. Keep light track of budget.
Occasional (intensive bursts —10-15 hrs spread across year)
Support cluster events (set-up, communications, promotion, documentation). Help with student research grant competition, including promoting the call, facilitating a grant workshop, collecting submissions, contacting adjudicators, and assisting in reporting/honoraria process. Contribute to annual end-of-year Hexagram report (gathering information from faculty members, formatting and entering information into online report form). Communicate with facilities manager about Milieux annual report.
